Pan European Change – Communication is Key

The IT department of a global FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Group) company was split across three countries with each office operating in a very different way. The goal of management was to standardise working practices, enable quick assessments of strategic decisions across global systems; enable staff to move between teams and respond more quickly to customer demands. Three previous initiatives had failed to achieve the required results.

Through a series of open discussions we learnt that staff were unclear about what management were trying to achieve and how they intended to achieve it. Staff were also concerned about the security of their jobs. Quite simply management had not communicated their ideas or consulted with their staff.

Working with management and staff we proposed and implemented a programme of work focused on:

  • Clarifying and communicating the problem and goals
  • Encouraging staff ownership of and involvement in activities to redesign business processes
  • Developing of a training programme approved by staff
  • Piloting and reviewing the effectiveness of the new processes.

Our involvement and guidance led to staff taking complete ownership for the change. The pilot in Germany proved so successful that the work was extended to offices in Belgium and England.
